I and Me

Mohan on April 22nd, 2011

I jump deftly outside myself

to see the socially constructed me

The conversation is almost amusing

As I look at me interestedly

Do you know the real you, I ask?

Or do you really live the charade?

How elaborate the layers that surround me

Trying to conform, but alienating I from me

As we begin to negotiate across the fence

I suddenly cannot see me

The camera becomes the photograph

I have begun the road to realization.

Famous Mistakes

Mohan on April 20th, 2011

Most companies spend an enormous amount of time and effort in seeking out best practices from their business or from companies they admire. Whenever I am asked to speak on a topic to a senior executive audience, they want to know about best practices they can learn from. While best practices are valuable, the single-minded [...]

The Power of Focus

Mohan on March 12th, 2011

We all marvel at the innovation and value that Apple has created in the past decade. But the lesson I take away from Apple is the power of focus . Apple basically has only five products, yet it generates $65 billion in revenues and has a market capitalization of almost $300 billion! One thing that [...]

Back to Fundamentals (Again!)

Mohan on January 16th, 2011

Fundamentals are fundamentals for a reason. They don’t change. We tend to get carried away by newness, and assume that everything needs to change. As the French saying goes, “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose” – the more things change, the more they stay the same. We tend to forget this. I remember [...]

Second thoughts on the iPad

Mohan on July 4th, 2010

I had posted earlier that I did not understand what need the Apple iPad really fills, and what use cases and scenarios it enables that are currently not possible. I had concluded that the iPad had no clear purpose and no clear position. Well, I’m being forced to reconsider my thoughts for two reasons. First, [...]

Not Yet

My body has not yet awoken, it still slumbers My morning has not yet broken, it is still in shadows My hunger has not yet been sated, it is still gnawing My seed has not yet germinated, it is still dormant My thoughts are not yet formulated, they are still nascent My gifts have not [...]

Visions of Myself

Mohan on March 2nd, 2010

Sometimes like driftwood Swept along by the current Caught in whirlpools Cast aside on the shore Wet and defenseless Sometimes like a leaf Dropped from a tree Buffeted by the winds Piled on the sidewalk Drying and lifeless Sometimes like a pebble Lying on the street Kicked by children Walked on by passersby Alone and [...]

There’s a Turkish proverb that says – “No matter how far you have gone down the wrong road – turn back!” That’s Microsoft for you in the mobile device business. For several years, I have voiced my frustrations to my friends in Redmond (disclaimer – I spend quite a bit of time with Microsoft on [...]
